The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called upon President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent the proposed hike in electricity tariffs by the Distribution Companies (DISCOs). In a statement signed by the OPC’s General-Secretary, Mr. Bunmi Fasehun, OPC President Mr. Wasiu Afolabi expressed the appeal on Sunday in Lagos.
The Federal Government had recently disclosed that eleven successor electricity companies had requested a review of their respective electricity tariffs. However, Afolabi urged Tinubu to reject the proposed increase in electricity prices, noting that both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) had already opposed the move.
Afolabi further emphasized that if the current tariff was not sufficient for the DISCOs to provide satisfactory service, they should surrender their licenses and cease operations. Additionally, he advocated for the elimination of the territorial monopoly, where only one DISCO has control over a service area without any competition.
